Originally called "The Journey of Hope" families find that this peer family education program fosters learning, healing, and empowerment among families of individuals with serious mental illness.
The Family-to-Family education course represents a real partnership of NAMI national, NAMI NJ and your local affiliate.
The course was designed and written by Dr. Joyce Burland of NAMI Vermont who remains as director of the program on the national level. NAMI NJ makes it possible for us to offer the program free of charge by providing all of the training and class materials.
This course is a 12-week program for caregivers of individuals diagnosed with serious and persistent mental illness. The curriculum focuses on the major psychiatric illnesses and presents the knowledge and skills that family members need when faced with the problems of mental illness.
The course is taught by trained NAMI family members who volunteer in two-member teams. Family Educators participate in an intensive weekend training seminar to prepare them to teach the course.
NAMI Bergen County proudly sponsors this program as an integral part of its grassroots educational mission. In general our programs are open to the public; however this particular program is for caregivers only. Registrations are on a first-come-first-serve basis. Schedules and location of the course may change according to our ability to obtain classroom space.
